Considerations

There are a few key considerations that typically precede decisions related to converting your basement into a living area for you and your family.

Type of Foundation: Structural Issues

Before you make any changes, you need to make sure your foundation is solid and there are no structural problems.

Humidity

Before making any decisions on the type of unsulation, heating/cooling options, you need to determine the moisture levels of your basement. You may want to consider adding a dehumidifier. The level of humidity will also influence the materials to be used for floor and walls. Non-organic materials are to be referred in order to avoid the formation of mold.

Lighting Conditions

In some cases, you may consider installing or enlarging a window(s) to allow more light into the basement. Keep in mind, however, that often times, the structural conditions of your home, may not allow you to make such changes.
